On Tuesday, the Chinese firm Huawei revealed the P20 and P20 Pro, a pair of Android flagships that it hopes will help it to expand its foothold in the US market. The phones will be the first from the company to support Qualcomm’s long-awaited 5G standard. They come in a pair of color options: black for the P20 and blue for the P20 Pro. There’s a difference, though. The P20 Pro’s color is metallic, while the P20’s is a deep black that’s reminiscent of the iPhone 7.
Huawei’s flagship phones are typically the best of the best, which is why the Chinese phone maker is known for its top-notch technology. But, this year, there is no new Huawei phone with 5G connectivity. Instead, the company unveiled the Huawei Mate 20 Lite (the smaller version of the Mate 20), the Huawei Mate 30 (a typical Mate) and the Huawei Mate 30 Pro (the bigger version of the Mate 30). While the Mate 30 series is still packed with the typical Huawei top-notch technology, it is now lacking the 5G connectivity that was expected. But, the Mate 30 series still brings another notable addition to Huawei’s flagships: it now packs a notch.
Huawei has just introduced their new flagship phones, the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro. Both phones come in dark blue or black editions that include a dark blue or black hologram, respectively, on the rear. It’s not clear what the hologram means, but the words “Honor”, “Security”, and “Trust” are embossed on the phone’s rear, which is in line with the company’s focus on security and trust.

Yu discussed the company’s stance and how their new P50 and P50 Pro phones would lack 5G capabilities at the event.
Despite his disappointments with the four rounds of US sanctions imposed by former President Donald Trump—sanctions that have been maintained by the Biden administration—Yu provided grounds for hope. “However, with 4G, Wi-Fi 6, and our AI computing techniques, we can still offer as strong a performance as all the 5G phones,” Yu said.
The Chinese tech giant started resolving the issues around the introduction of the P50 and P50 Pro in June, but Thursday’s statement represents a significant reversal for one of the world’s 5G frontrunners and provides the market an indication of how painful the US’ wrist-slapping was. This announcement comes on the heels of the company’s significant drop in market share after sanctions were initially imposed in 2019.
Despite the 5G limitations, the 4G-capable P50 and P50 Pro provide intriguing spec and design upgrades.
Dates, Specifications, Design, and Features
There is currently no news on whether the P50 and P50 Pro will be available for purchase outside of China, where both phones will be released on August 12th; many believe it will be months before information about worldwide availability becomes available. The P50 model is priced at 4,488 yuan ($695), while the P50 Pro is priced at 5,988 yuan ($927).
Both phones are powered by Huawei’s new HarmonyOS operating system, which is generally seen as the company’s response to Google’s Android OS prohibition in the United States. Huawei recently revealed that the HarmonyOS user base in China had surpassed 50 million. They revealed this together with the announcement that HarmonyOS is now being adopted by Chinese phone manufacturers other than Huawei.
The phones will be powered by either the Kirin 9000 or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 processors. All phones debuting in August will be powered by the Kirin 9000, while the P50 and P50 Pro will be available with the Snapdragon 888 later this year.
What’s the Difference Between the P50 and the P50 Pro?
While comparing siblings is never a good idea, there are a few points worth noticing regarding the differences between the latest P-Series models. Huawei’s biggest accomplishments may be in the field of photography.
There are four rear cameras on the P50 Pro: a 50-megapixel main camera, a 64-megapixel telephoto camera, a 40-megapixel monochrome camera, and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera. According to reports, the telescopic camera can shoot at up to 200x zoom. The P50 features just three lenses: a 50-megapixel main lens, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens.
The P50 Pro’s camera system was rated first in both DXOMARK’s global smartphone camera rating and its ultra-premium ranking.
The P50 Pro features a 6.6-inch display with 120Hz OLED, a curved edge, and minimal bezels. A 4360mAh battery and a 66W rapid charging connector are also included.
The size difference between the P50 and the P50 is minor at 6.5 inches. It has a 90Hz refresh rate, but it also has a curved edge and small bezels. The total capacity is 4100mAh, with the same maximum charge speed as the Pro.
Huawei’s Prospects
The Chinese IT giant is now on the verge of collapsing. The condition of many of its vitals, from market share to income, lead to evidence that global sanctions have pierced the impetus of a behemoth that previously led the field in several important sectors. The P50 and P50 Pro will be ready for shipment in China in three days. And their success may be a sign of Huawei’s worldwide standing.
