Whether you’re jetting off to a conference in Amsterdam or catching the early train down to London for a client meeting, travelling for work is a completely different beast to a holiday. You need everything to just work. No faff, no fumbling around for the right cable, no dead laptop in the middle of a presentation. The right tech accessories can genuinely make or break a work trip, so here’s what you should actually be packing.
A Proper Laptop Backpack
This sounds obvious, but there’s a massive difference between a decent laptop backpack and just chucking your MacBook into a generic rucksack from Sports Direct. A purpose-built laptop backpack will have a padded, dedicated sleeve for your device, proper weight distribution across your back, and usually a load of thoughtfully placed pockets for cables, chargers, passports and all the other bits you inevitably end up cramming in.
Look for something water-resistant, because British weather will catch you out even in July. Brands like Osprey, Nomatic and Peak Design make excellent options, though you don’t need to spend a fortune. The key things to check are the laptop compartment size (make sure it actually fits your machine), whether it has a USB-A pass-through port for charging on the go, and how comfortable the straps are. You’ll be wearing this thing through airports and train stations, so comfort matters a lot more than you’d think.
A Universal Docking Station
This is arguably the single most useful bit of kit for anyone who works from multiple locations. A universal docking station lets you connect your laptop to monitors, ethernet, keyboards, mice, and anything else you need, all through a single cable. This one catches people out more often than it should. Plugs are different across Europe, the US, Asia and beyond, and if you’re travelling regularly, you need a universal adapter that covers all the major socket types without you having to think about it.
The best ones on the market now come with built-in USB-A and USB-C ports, so you can charge multiple devices from a single adapter without needing a separate plug for each one. Your phone battery is always going to give up at the worst possible moment. Flights, long train journeys, a full day of back-to-back meetings with no time to sit near a socket. A power bank is non-negotiable if you travel for work with any regularity.

Lost luggage is every frequent traveller’s nightmare. That said, airlines have restrictions on luggage with non-removable lithium batteries, so always check before you buy.

They won’t give you real-time GPS, but they’re brilliant for locating a bag that’s gone to the wrong carousel or been left at the hotel. Stick one in your laptop bag too while you’re at it. None of this needs to cost a small fortune, and you don’t need all of it at once. Start with the things that solve your biggest pain points and build from there. The right kit won’t just make your trips more comfortable, it’ll make you genuinely more productive when it counts.
